In WAU, the Primary 4 class are studying WW2. On 12th January they attended a series of workshops in The Palace Stables where they learned all about what it was like to live during the war.
They made identity tags and cards, so that, if stopped, they could produce evidence that they were not spies.
They learned about how people lived; hand-me-down clothes, toys, evacuation.
After this, they found out, from an evacuation officer what it was like for children when they were evacuated to the country.
They learned that there were three types of shelter. The Morrison Shelter was made from a fortified kitchen table, The Anderson Shelter was dug in the back garden and the children found what it was like in a real underground shelter. What they found really interesting was that they had to follow a white line, which also was how road markings began to appear on roads.
Finally they went to visit an American soldier who showed them how to break codes and how to march and stand to attention.
The children learned lots, so if you see the Primary 4 class writing a strange series of letters, perhaps they are writing in code.
